Our second #cclivechat on Twitter was another succes. We were joined by authors and cops and had a few great discussions going on simultaneously.
The first discussion centered on how cold cases are selected for review. What works to get the media’s attention, how difficult it is to get victims’ family members involved and, in what condition do we find cold cases? We spoke about evidence/storage rooms, connecting with other cold case bloggers, and which cases successfully attracted media attention.
Second, Sue Carney led a fascinating discussion on touch DNA, turn around time (in general two weeks for a full LCN analysis and interpretation), what evidence is kept in labs, searching databases, and who makes the call to destroy evidence. Joe and Sue also discussed the difficulties when a suspect is travelling between states in the USA and what consequences that has for coordinating DNA findings. Joe explained that it would be uploaded in the FBI’s ViCap and CODIS databases.
Third, we had a very good discussion about elements we need to keep in mind when we try to get media attention for cold cases. Mike Parker educated us about ACET that the media needs: action, conflict, emotion and timing. Action and conflict should be part of the post as we describe the unsolved murder to hold people’s attention. But, we need to add pictures and/or video from the victim preferable within a family life setting to get people’s compassion and to make them want to jump into action to help solve the case. As an example, he mentioned the case of Jospeh Azevedo where the public jumped in after seeing photographs of Joseph as a father of small children. And every case escription or update needs timing: publish around anniversaries, key dates in the case or trial, or family life (e.g.: victims’ children graduating or getting married without their parents by their side, etc). Mike also made us aware that we need to think globally if we want to solve cold cases in the USA: “one third of the 10.5 mio people living in LA county were born outside the USA.” In other words, your key witnesses may be visitors from abroad or may have gone abroad. So, it would not be a bad idea for cold case bloggers to unite globally!
Fourth, we briefly touched on how many grandchildren are now going through their parents and grandparents papers and are providing police with information. One example is the case of Stephen Miera here on DCC. Joe pointed out that despite more interaction with the family, solvability factors determine the chance for a successful prosecution. We do need biological materials for DNA testing, witnesses who are still alive, physical evidence that can be tested with modern technology, new leads, etc.
Last, we spoke about the differences between cold cases and unsolved homicides. In an unsolved homicide, police is still pursuing leads, talking to witnesses, etc. In a cold cases, there are no new leads anymore and none have come in for a certain amount of time. That period can vary from months to years. We also discussed how long a cold case can remain cold. The answer is forever. We have examples in history where cold cases have gone unsolved for decades. Just look at the cases of Tutankhamen (cause of death: natural or murder), the Romanovs (positive identification after location and dismissal of false claims re Anastasia Romanov) and the Dauphin (location, identification and cause of death). All three mentioned cases were eventually de-mystified by DNA. The difference is that we stopped calling them cold cases and refer to them as historical mysteries.
Jody Ewing’s cases have been used by Nancy Grace on her shows so please check in with Iowa Cold Cases to get the latest!
The hour was gone in a flash but the tweets are still coming in so check on Twitter for more. Today’s participants were @coldcasesquad, @katcop13, @lilaclounge, @iowacoldcases, @bluedog89, @mplasd, @tanyagoodwindoc, @deaddollmovie and @vidocq_cc.
The verbatim chat is below.
See you for the next chat on March 11, from noon-1pm EST!

ColdCaseSquad | Is that Low Copy? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:03:09 |
Vidocq_CC | @LilacLounge And it can be used on many items, right? From curtains, to handbags, to basically any kind of material? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:03:53 |
LilacLounge | @Vidocq_CC @lilaclounge Touch DNA is essentially a more sensitive DNA profiling technique which can detect low levels of DNA #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:04:05 |
iowacoldcases | Nancy Grace just featured the 2nd IA CC within a week. 1st was Jodi Huisentruit, then Johnny Gosch. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:04:11 |
LilacLounge | @ColdCaseSquad Yes that's right! Called touch DNA since it sometimes works to detect DNA deposited by touching an object #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:05:05 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases Awesome, congrats! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:05:11 |
Vidocq_CC | Where are my manners? Welcome Sue, Kathleen and Jody!!! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:05:37 |
ColdCaseSquad | That's good news @iowacoldcases do you have a link for everyone to your site you can share? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:05:50 |
LilacLounge | @Vidocq_CC Absolutely. It works well on DNA recovered from many different surfaces. Some work better than others... #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:05:57 |
ColdCaseSquad | @LilacLounge we have court standards here in the US for new #DNA technology, do you have the same issues in the #UK? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:07:14 |
Vidocq_CC | @LilacLounge Can you still detect touch DNA after materials has been submerged in water? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:07:35 |
katcop13 | Glad to be here! I used to profile CCs on their anniversary dates in crime stoppers-always a good idea #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:08:00 |
bluedog89 | @LilacLounge @Vidocq_CC And this could be skin-cell DNA? (i.e., skin cells that sloughed off a person's body.) #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:08:05 |
ColdCaseSquad | Great point @Katcop13 - especially the date/scene of the incident - now we have "electronic grave" sites to follow #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:09:39 |
Vidocq_CC | @katcop13 I have started to feature cold cases that were posted a year ago on DCC's home page for extra attention #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:10:06 |
iowacoldcases | The link to the site is http://iowacoldcases.org #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:10:25 |

Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases Thanks, Jody! Any new cases you will be featuring? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:11:07 |
LilacLounge | @Vidocq_CC I'd say usually not. In some cases it might be possible. There are other factors that might also affect results. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:11:48 |
Vidocq_CC | @bluedog89 @LilacLounge I think so but Sue is the expert here! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:11:52 |
LilacLounge | @bluedog89 @Vidocq_CC Yes, skin cells are most likely the ones deposited by touch, but we usually refer only to there being DNA #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:12:52 |
iowacoldcases | @Vidocq_CC We're adding new ones every day; Nancy has been adding some from the late 1800s. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:13:12 |
LilacLounge | @ColdCaseSquad Re Standards: In the UK, as elsewhere, we have accreditation for all #DNA profiling providers #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:14:02 |

Vidocq_CC | @TanyaGoodwinDoc Good question and thanks for joining! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:20:19 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc Currently UK lead times can be a couple of weeks. There's a little more interpretation that in routine DNA work #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:20:26 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases @MPLASD Not always easy especially in decade old cases but I think w/more web exposure, we can change that. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:21:12 |
ColdCaseSquad | Welcome #FF @TanyaGoodwinDoc @MPLASD glad you found the conversation #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:21:26 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases @MPLASD I refer victims' family to DCC and show them the other photographs, usually that helps. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:21:46 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | Glad to join and learn. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:22:31 |
bluedog89 | What's the best way to involve the media in getting the word out on cold cases? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:22:41 |
iowacoldcases | @Vidocq_CC @MPLASD It's amazing how often a vic's grandchildren will run across the case & send info. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:23:22 |
Vidocq_CC | @bluedog89 Good question! I think that asking does not help. Showing them that there is attention via blogs, might. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:23:43 |
ColdCaseSquad | @bluedog89 that's the magic question-but I think we are garnering some attention already #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:24:03 |
ColdCaseSquad | @LilacLounge can you help out the good Doctor with her #DNA question? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:24:38 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases @MPLASD That's what I have re Stephen Miera, CA https://www.defrostingcoldcases.com/?s=stephen+miera #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:24:49 |
iowacoldcases | @bluedog89 Re getting media involved, send the paper/station reminder of upcoming anniv., ask if will cover it. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:25:10 |
katcop13 | @bluedog89 exactly how @MPLASD explained. Sounds like a good blog post for me to share 16 yrs experience! Will do... #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:26:12 |
bluedog89 | @iowacoldcases @bluedog89 That's a great idea. Plus, social networking, as we all know, is helping the cause. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:26:36 |
ColdCaseSquad | @Katcop13 would be a great guest blog post on CCS or DCC #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:27:06 |
Vidocq_CC | @katcop13 @bluedog89 @MPLASD Pls do blog about it and allow Joe and me to post on our sites as well? Max the exposure!!! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:27:21 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc @ColdCaseSquad I'd say about 2 weeks minimum for a full LCN analysis & interpretation. Can be quicker if urgent #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:27:25 |
katcop13 | I will take u up on that! #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:27:49 |
MPLASD | #LASD #Lancaster 1981 recent cold case arrest. Fatherly photos drew major media attn. See http://bit.ly/hezuYE on www.lasd.org #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:28:22 |
bluedog89 | @katcop13 @bluedog89 Please send me your blog info so I can add it to @Vidocq_CC database. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:28:33 |
Vidocq_CC | @mplasd if you guys need help with exposure, you can always send the info to Joe and me and we will post it. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:28:39 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | What circumstances make "urgent"? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:29:08 |
Vidocq_CC | @MPLASD Very glad to see that case solved! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:29:31 |
ColdCaseSquad | @TanyaGoodwinDoc I would say a mass murderer or serial killer case when the person must be stopped ASAP #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:30:04 |
MPLASD | The media seeks ACET: Action, Conflict, Emotion, Timing. Look at top of TV news and front page of paper and you will find these #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:30:43 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc if the analysis is in a current, rather than a cold case & suspect is in custody, pending bail timescales etc. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:30:55 |
iowacoldcases | @MPLASD Yes, those are great photos! I'll post the story on our news pg after the chat. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:30:57 |
bluedog89 | @ColdCaseSquad @TanyaGoodwinDoc What about backlogs? You hear about delays all the time due to that. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:31:30 |
ColdCaseSquad | RT @MPLASD: The media seeks ACET: Action, Conflict, Emotion, Timing. Look at top of TV news and front page of paper #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:31:43 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc But generally speaking LCN takes more time due to complex interpretation and duplicate testing. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:31:59 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases @MPLASD Pls add my link, Jody: https://www.defrostingcoldcases.com/?s=joseph+azevedo #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:32:20 |
bluedog89 | @MPLASD Excellent point of reference. Thanks for sharing. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:33:22 |
LilacLounge | @bluedog89 @ColdCaseSquad @TanyaGoodwinDoc Yes, I backlogs do affect all kinds of tests, not just DNA. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:33:34 |
iowacoldcases | @Vidocq_CC @MPLASD Will do! #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:07 |
ColdCaseSquad | @forensicpathdoc if you can join us at the Cold Case Live Chat-we'd love for you to share your expertise #CCLiveChat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:10 |
katcop13 | More prep work on pd's part leads to media att. Less work 4 assignment editors is very appealing. Arrange talking heads/photos #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:25 |
Vidocq_CC | @iowacoldcases @Vidocq_CC @MPLASD Much appreciated! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:45 |
MPLASD | (News Media) Emotion: Photos, vids, interviews with family who suffered loss. People are drawn in & feel personal connection. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:48 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | If serial killer is moving between states, how our DNA findings coordinated? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:34:50 |
LilacLounge | @bluedog89 In an ideal world backlogs shouldn't affect timescales but the reality is that they do. There will always be limits. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:35:31 |
ColdCaseSquad | Through the FBI's ViCap and CODIS databases - Violent Criminal Apprehension Program #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:36:02 |
katcop13 | Always look for angle in the story - what will warrant the media's attention & make them want to run it. #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:36:32 |
MPLASD | @katcop13 You are right about the prep work being pivotal to gain news media attn. as well as other comments you are making. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:36:54 |
Vidocq_CC | @MPLASD @katcop13 Have you noticed whether media is more likely now to look for info on blogs? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:37:45 |
ColdCaseSquad | Link for ViCAP http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/vicap #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:37:54 |
iowacoldcases | @MPLASD Aaron Brilbeck with WHO-TV has been doing a great job with the IA CC series. Lots of emotion. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:37:57 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | How fast are those data searches? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:38:02 |
katcop13 | I worked in pio for 16 yrs. Handled media during flt 800 tragedy and katie beers kidnapping #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:38:25 |
ColdCaseSquad | @TanyaGoodwinDoc it depends but I have had very good success in a few days-depends on how many cases, MOs etc. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:39:14 |
MPLASD | (News Media) Timing: For cold cases, anniv. dates, date/venue as son graduates HS without his father being there... #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:39:22 |
deaddollmovie | Is there a difference between a cold case and an unsolved case? #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:40:26 |
ColdCaseSquad | The media is generally not interested in "public service homicides" #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:40:28 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc Great question? Assume that the US DNA database is national? @ColdCaseSquad can you shed light on this? #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:40:35 |
bluedog89 | @ColdCaseSquad Please explain "public service homicide" #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:41:31 |
iowacoldcases | @deaddollmovie Cold case is when all leads have been run out. Could be 8 months - 3 years, etc. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:41:41 |
Vidocq_CC | @deaddollmovie Welcome and great Q. My super always said unsolved is still priority/current. Cold=no leads at all, no priority #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:41:52 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc In the UK a DNA database search takes only a few minutes. It's the testing beforehand that takes time. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:42:00 |
ColdCaseSquad | We have local databases, state databases and the national-only on CSI Miami does every profile go national #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:42:08 |
LilacLounge | @ColdCaseSquad Interesting. In that case, location will have an effect. Does that cause difficulties? #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:43:18 |
bluedog89 | @Vidocq_CC @deaddollmovie So an "unsolved case" has leads, persons of interest, etc.? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:43:27 |
ColdCaseSquad | A "PSH" is when an individual has a questionable background, i.e. drug dealer, career criminal, etc.-can't sell papers for that #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:43:38 |
MPLASD | @katcop13 Your experience shows #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:44:12 |
ColdCaseSquad | @LilacLounge a few states can use #Familial #DNA which can save lots of time #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:44:25 |
Vidocq_CC | @bluedog89 @deaddollmovie unsolved is not unsolvable, there might still be leads to examine, evidence awaiting results, etc. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:44:43 |
LilacLounge | @ColdCaseSquad Are searches of your national database limited due to cost? #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:45:14 |
bluedog89 | @Vidocq_CC @bluedog89 @deaddollmovie I sincerely believe NO case is unsolvable. If there's a will, there's a way. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:45:48 |
deaddollmovie | @iowacoldcases Thank you. How long can a case stay a cold case? #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:45:53 |
ColdCaseSquad | @LilacLounge the first step is always the local database-since most offenders live in that area-saves time and $ #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:45:58 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | How are cold cases picked? Random? Interest? Someone inquired? New tips/findings? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:46:32 |
ColdCaseSquad | @bluedog99 yes all cases are solvable, however not always prosecutable #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:46:37 |
katcop13 | @MPLASD: yours, too! We'll have to chat further in near future... #Cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:46:51 |
Vidocq_CC | RT @ColdCaseSquad: @bluedog99 yes all cases are solvable, however not always prosecutable #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:47:04 |
Vidocq_CC | @ColdCaseSquad By us CC bloggers or by the cops? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:47:24 |
MPLASD | Recent studies & experience show news media use new media A LOT. Key words will draw them to blogs, tweets, websites via search #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:47:27 |
LilacLounge | @ColdCaseSquad Makes sense. I'm not used to considering such vast geography as the US. Fascinating insight. Thanks. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:47:41 |
iowacoldcases | @deaddollmovie Cases can stay cold indefinitely - even when LE know who perp is/was, but unable to make arrest. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:47:44 |

MPLASD | Think globally. Key witness may be vacationer. 1/3 of 10.5M people living in LACounty were born outside U.S. People visit. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:54:17 |
ColdCaseSquad | Many times the physical evidence is destroyed by accident or fire-also the securing of evidence was mostly done in plastic #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:54:50 |

ColdCaseSquad | Any evidence that may contain bodily fluids is secured in paper-that wasn't always the case! #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:56:31 |
TanyaGoodwinDoc | How and where are evidence files/boxes/archives kept so that if something comes up, they'll be useful? #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:56:46 |
Vidocq_CC | @TanyaGoodwinDoc I found them in evidence rooms in PDs. Ventilated, cool and in dry boxes. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:57:45 |

LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc Most cold cases samples I've worked on are microscope slides or fibre lifts, stored at labs for upto 30 years. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:59:08 |
ColdCaseSquad | Any evidence that needs lab testing goes directly to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner here in NYC #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:59:12 |
Vidocq_CC | @ColdCaseSquad @TanyaGoodwinDoc PDs I worked for had their own rooms but those were in size no comparisson to NY. #cclivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 17:59:21 |
LilacLounge | @TanyaGoodwinDoc Often, the original exhibits have been destroyed. Certainly in cases dating back to the 80s or earlier. #CClivechat | Fri, 04 Mar 2011 18:00:06 |
