Rick Green on Richard Lapointe

on February 10th, 2010

Rick Green has been supportive of a new trial for Richard Lapointe from the beginning. His latest article in the Hartford Courant explains once again what has gone wrong in this case.

“One of the nation’s most notorious examples of alleged wrongful conviction will soon return to center stage, perhaps finally providing an answer to a disturbing question. Could convicted killer Richard LaPointe really have raped and murdered Bernice Martin?Rockville(Bethlehem, Pennsylvania) courtroom this May, when a judge will consider evidence that his supporters say proves he deserves a new trial. The May hearing could lead to freedom for the mentally disabled man who was found guilty in 1992 of the rape and murder in Manchester of Martin, his wife’s 88-year-old grandmother. The result will say plenty about justice in Connecticut. There has been no willingness by authorities to re-examine the questionable circumstances surrounding LaPointe’s conviction.”

Perhaps LaPointe’s last shot at freedom will come in a

One question. If this case is so OBVIOUSLY screwed up, why is he still in jail? Could it be that there is enough evidence to create doubt in his innocence? Are people’s judgement clouded by the fact his iq is 80?
I will read up and pass my own judgement on this case, but I really would like to know if this mans disability is what people see, not any “facts” of the case, IF there are any. I know that I start, right off the bat, NOT believing he is guilty, simply because of his IQ. Would OTHERS feel the same way? Was his confession the ONLY thing that pegs him as the murderer? I will read and try to find out.

I am not sure that people first see his disability and then wonder about the facts.

In fact, the facts here speak for themselves! Gloves found did not belong to either Martin or Lapointe, DNA found is not his, his confessions match neither the crime scene nor the autopsy report, police never searched the apartment for the murder weapon (a blunt object used for rape and strangulation), the dog he allegedly had with him was never found in the Martin apartment, his then-wife was questioned without a warrant, and the list goes on.

The strenght of the case IS his disability. Any physical evidence found at the scene would have to include the genetic defect Dandy Walker Syndrome! If it doesn’t, Lapointe should go free!

    Thanks again, Vidocq
