Lake Charles man arrested for 1982 sex crime
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (Lake Charles, Louisiana) arrested a man last Tuesday after he supposedly confirmed allegations involving a complaint made about sexually inappropriate actions with a juvenile that happened back in 1982.
On July 19, 2010, officials received a complaint regarding 68-year-old John Weatherall of Lake Charles, LA. An investigation revealed that Weatherall allegedly touched a 16-year-old minor in a sexually inappropriate manner back in 1982. According to the authorities, Weatherall was questioned by detectives last Tuesday and he confirmed some of the allegations. Weatherall was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. His bond was set at $15,000.
Officials say that prior to 2005, a victim had 10 years after their 18th birthday to report a sexual crime. In 2005, the law was changed and the victim now has 30 years after their 18th birthday to report a sexual crime.
I have to ask: why now?
Because the 30 years are almost over? Of course, but again: why now? The law changed in 2005 so the complaint could have been made five years ago. But even in 2005, it would have been 23 years after the alleged crime. And I cannot help but wonder why it took so long to file that complaint.
To be continued…
