New Zealand’s PM John Key to consider request for independent inquiry in Crewe Murders

on October 28th, 2010

New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Keys has received Rochelle Crewe‘s request and as a credit to him, he did not immediately dismiss it!

He stated that “it’s a complex issue. The police are taking some steps, not to the satisfaction of Rochelle Crewe and I accept and acknowledge that, but I need to take advice about what might be appropriate steps or otherwise from here, and what may or may not be achieved.”

Labour leader Phil Goff said he supported a review, but it should happen independent of police “because of the baggage from the past“. Vidocq applauds these developments!

Ms Crewe has appointed a lawyer to handle all communication between the police and herself about her request.

In 1970, a murder investigation was launched after Rochelle, then a baby, was found alive in a blood stained house with her parents nowhere to be found. This investigation would later shock the nation in what was to become one of New Zealand’s most notorious cases of police misconduct. A time line of the case can be found here.

The bodies of Jeanette and Harvey Crewe were discovered weighted and dumped in the Waikato River and neighbour Thomas was arrested and convicted following two trials. Thomas was exonerated but the mystery remains…who fed Rochelle when she was a baby, who shots the Crewes, and from all the key players…who is still alive and dares to tell the truth?
